A botanical tour through great orchid destinations of KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga in South Africa and Lesotho
Join an international botanical tourwith a group of orchid enthusiasts to great destinations in KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Lesotho and Mpumalanga at the height of the wild flower and orchid season. Starting at Durban’s Ushaka International Airport and you will travel to Umtamvuna Nature Reserve in the Pondoland centre of endemism. From the coast, you will travel through thornveld and misbelt forest to the foot of the Eastern Cape Drakensberg near Maclear. The route then passes over Naudesnek Pass to Tiffindell Ski resort (2700m) - great alpine flower destinations.
The route to Underberg takes in the Barkly Pass. Using 4x4 vehicles, we spend time on Sani Pass, the most exceptionally diverse wild flower destination in the Drakensberg and Lesotho. Travelling through the foothills our route takes us to the northern Drakensberg, staying at Giants Castleand the Cavern (including Royal Natal National Park) which will provide many new species. The Drakensberg trip ends witha stay at Witsieshoek (2500m), following the trail from the Sentinelcar park, part of the RNNP Amphitheatre. From there we travel to subtropical coastal vegetation, staying at Mtunzini, Zululand en route to Mpumalanga where we will explore orchids and plants of the lowveld and highveld grasslands based at Verlorenkloof a scenically beautiful trout fishing and hiking destination. The tour ends at O R Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.
